Getting People to Your Online Event

Remember when we used to meet in person? Not lately!

Remember when we used to meet in person? Not lately!

I’ve been running online events for a long time, even before COVID. But for the last year I’ve run several virtual events for Toastmasters. Here’s three tips on how to get folks to register and show up to your online event.

  1. Select the right title

  2. Target the right audience

  3. Start marketing early and often

The right title is critical because it needs to give enough information to your audience about your content and pique their interest so they read more about it.

Use targeted ads on either LinkedIn or Facebook to ensure you're not wasting your money or time. I create an event on Facebook and then boost the event. I select the targeted viewers of the boost.

Market your event early, at least a month before, so that your audience has time to plan to attend.

Now lets talk about how to get people to show up. What I’ve found is that 30% of people who registered for an event don’t bother to show up. What you can do to fix that is charge something for your event. Even a small amount of money makes your audience put “skin in the game.”

If you are a not-for-profit like we are, you will need to figure out what to do with the money you raise. We often use the money to buy a gift for our speaker and volunteers.

I hope these tips help you get attendees to your online events. Let me know if you have any other tips and while you are here check out the rest of the facilitator content as well.
