Hide Self-View When Video Conferencing

I’ve been getting really irritated with seeing myself. Are you?

I think that remote video conferencing tools like Zoom created the “self-view” because everyone was worried that their video was at a strange angle, too dark, and out of focus. But now we’ve got this figured out. I now use the feature to “hide self-view.” I am really enjoying my meetings more now that I’ve started removing my self-view from the screen.

Benefits of hiding self-view:

  1. Lets me focus on the discussion

  2. Lets me see the reactions of others

  3. Feels more like a normal discussion with friends/colleagues

Times when I still use self-view:

  1. Yoga class - I can see if my yoga poses are straight.

  2. Posture coaching - Seeing how you are sitting or standing or working out with a posture coach is very helpful. By the way, if you are looking for a posture coach I have some recommendations.

  3. When goofing off - playing with filters, hats, etc. is plenty of fun with family and friends.

I hope I start some controversy about this. I hope more video messaging systems will include the option to hide our own views.
