The Five Step process to Succeed at Leading a Volunteer Org

Leading a volunteer organization is a noble undertaking, but it requires more than good intentions to succeed. To truly make an impact, you need a clear plan and a committed team. Here's a five-step process that can help you get there:

Step 1: Start with why. Before you do anything else, take the time to reflect on why you are personally invested in this project. Write a personal mission statement that captures your passion and post it somewhere visible. When things get tough, and they will, you'll need this reminder to keep going.

Step 2: Create a shared vision. To create a sense of purpose and momentum, you need to align your values, vision, and mission with those of your team. Start by drafting your own, then gather input and feedback from your fellow leaders. Discuss what excites you and what you hope to achieve. The resulting set of values, vision, and mission should be something you all feel passionate about.

Step 3: Set SMART goals. Now it's time to get specific about what you want to achieve. Create a list of focus areas and write a SMART goal for each one. Make sure each goal is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. This will help you stay on track and measure your progress.

Step 4: Recruit the right people. Finding the right volunteers can be a challenge, but it's critical to your success. Identify the skills and time commitments needed for each role, and create a clear pitch that explains how the volunteer will benefit and how the organization will benefit. Once you've found the right person, review the SMART goals and obtain confirmation of responsibility. Onboard the volunteer and make sure they feel heard and welcome. Listen to their own personal "Why" and how they want to benefit from the role.

Step 5: Create a schedule. Finally, create a schedule that includes deadlines for each goal and a set of check-ins to keep everyone accountable. Some of these check-ins can be formal reports or documents, but at least one should be a discussion so that the volunteer can share any interesting intel. As time goes on, be open to re-evaluating the schedule and updating it as needed.

By following these five steps, you can lead a volunteer organization that achieves meaningful impact and inspires your team to do their best work.
