Why do we meet?

Why do we meet?

Why do we meet?

I love the interaction I am getting from people when I tell them I am writing a meeting blog. I recently I asked my friends on LinkedIn to give me some reasons why we meet. I loved their answers!!

“To collaborate and ideate” - Sint

“To make decisions”-Neha

These are so true and I am glad they brought them up.

A lot of work that gets done in meetings could be done asynchronously through a google spreadsheet and google docs or similar sharing system. Also a lot of work can get done via email or texting or chat systems like Slack.

But what is almost impossible to do without being live together in some kind of meeting?

I propose that meeting LIVE is the best way to generate a feeling.

I know what you are thinking, "That is completely insane!”

Let me give some examples…

If I am holding a staff meeting with my team I want two feelings:

I personally want to feel confident in my team. When I can see their expressions, hear their tone of voice, I am able to gain the confidence.

I want them to feel motivated and focused. I see them smile and express excitement about the plan.

If I am running a conference I want everyone to leave to feel inspired.

There is an energy from a large group of experts in the same field coming together to share knowledge.

If I am having a one on one with my manager I want to feel confident and motivated.

The decision itself isn’t the hard part. Instead it is getting everyone to be on the same page about the decision.

To feel like, “Yeah, we can do this.”

I challenge you as you put together an activity filled agenda for your next meeting to consider the feelings you want to generate.
