Engagement Series: Ownership of Segments

When you share the ownership, everything is better.

When you share the ownership, everything is better.

I’ve been considering how to increase engagement in my meetings. After an awesome discussion with my mentor Jim Skinner, he pointed out the importance of ownership in his meetings.

When an attendee has a segment of the meeting where they present or lead a discussion, they will automatically become engaged.

What does this look like in practice?

Weekly staff meeting: Have each member of your team own a metric or report that they will share. They own that segment. They need to keep it on time and fun.

Working session: Give parts of the system to individuals to share their plans/ideas/designs/etc.

Broadcasts: Get many different people on stage to make the audience feel represented.

When lots of people have ownership it makes them engage. They have skin in the game. And the cherry on top: you as the facilitator have less work to do!
